Kayla Wardlow, COTA, CDP

Kayla Wardlow is a licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant since 2014 and Certified Dementia Practitioner. Kayla’s interest in geriatrics began while working in an assisted living facility during college. Upon graduation, Kayla worked simultaneously in a behavioral health, acute hospital setting and part-time in a secured memory care setting catered to residents with higher safety and supervision needs. Since 2015, she has worked in the memory care unit at Attic Angels as the Activity Coordinator. Here she develops and facilitates client-centered activity programs for residents with various forms and in different stages of dementia. Kayla is responsible for assessing resident’s activity interests and life histories and creating individualized care plans related to these findings. She charts their activity attendance and is in constant contact with family members to ensure their needs are met and heard. Kayla continually provides hands-on activities and dementia training to new volunteers and memory care assistants in attempts to better resident’s overall quality of life.

Kayla has been an Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Educator since October of 2016 taking both Level I (1 week) and Level II (8 week) students. In this role, she mentors the student and provides hands-on training of practices used by the Attic Angel facility. Use of assessment tools, care plans, activity calendar planning and facilitating of programs are just some of the topics the student learns to aid in their professional development. During this time, Kayla is providing the student with constant feedback and grading them based on their level of participation and skills displayed.

Kayla participated in the Attic Angel Mentor program in September of 2017 and was a co-presenter at the 2018 Annual Alzheimer’s Association Conference. Here she spoke about ways to adapt activities for individuals throughout the various stages of dementia.

Kayla’s Certifications and Licensure include:

  • Certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy
  • Licensed by the Department of Safety & Professional Services in the State of WI by the Occupational Therapists Affiliated Credentialing Board
  • Certified Dementia Practitioner through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners
  • Certified in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association
