Essential Tips You Need to Know to Control Your Blood Sugar Issues

Is your blood sugar giving you problems like dizziness or fainting? Blood sugar must be controlled when you have diabetes to avoid severe problems like shock which will land you in the hospital. Here are some essential tips you need to know about blood sugar issues so you can control your blood sugar levels:

Tip # 1 – Stay away from sugar
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar means you do not need to consume sugar to help you with the dizziness, shaking, disoriented, and confusion you may be struggling with. When you opt for a soda or candy bar, it can actually make the problem worse because they cause your blood sugar to spike. This causes the body to create too much insulin and you may have a hypoglycemic reaction. When you start to get the shakes and the low blood sugar issues, opt for protein. Look for protein shakes like the Boost brand as they are designed for individuals with blood sugar problems.

Tip # 2 – Talk to your doctor
Depending upon the type of diabetes you have, your doctor may require you to test your blood sugars daily. This will help you track which foods keep your blood sugar levels under control and which ones will cause it to spike and then drop rapidly. You will need a blood glucose monitor to test your blood sugar levels:  Your doctor will also help with suggestions to change your diet so you can find foods that will regulate your blood sugar and avoid spikes and drops. 

Tip # 3 – Eat right
Eating the right food can help you avoid low blood sugar attacks that leave you feeling dizzy, tired, fatigued, etc. For starters, never skip breakfast. Instead of grabbing for the sugary breakfast foods, look for whole wheat toast with peanut butter, oatmeal, and fresh fruits. These foods will help the body slowly break down the food into glucose, which allows you to feel normal as you won’t have spikes or declines in your blood sugar levels. High fiber foods are always helpful for your blood sugar, like the whole grains they take longer to break down and it helps you maintain consistent energy levels. For lunch, opt for a high protein meal like a chicken salad. Fruits like asparagus are wonderful items to add to your meal as they have carbohydrates and they are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Dinner also needs to be a meal that has a lot of protein like a steak, fish, chicken, turkey, etc. High protein meals for dinner offer you a chance to keep your blood sugar levels under control so you don’t experience problems when you wake up in the morning. For snacks, look for beans, raisins, figs, lentils, and peanut butter with celery. 

Tip # 4 – Control your weight
It is common to have low blood sugar problems if you are obese or overweight. Try to keep your BMI below 25 in order to control your blood sugar levels. This will also help you with other problems you may face like joint pain due to the excess weight. Do not drink soda as this puts too much sugar in your system and if you don’t learn to control your low blood sugar issues, you will have diabetes as you get older. 

Tip # 5 – Exercise
You must participate in daily exercise to remain healthy. A 20 minute job each day can help you with your blood sugar problems and this will strengthen your body, especially your essential organs like your heart.
