ACTIVITIES FOR THE FAMILY CAREGIVER: ALZHEIMER'S
The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, is a progressive mental deterioration due to generalized degeneration of the brain. Although Alzheimer’s account for more than 60% of the cases of dementia, it is not a normal part of the aging process.
Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease where the issues affecting your loved one will get worse over time and survival can range from four to twenty years. The common symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease are:
• Memory loss
• Confusion with time or place
• Trouble planning, solving problems, or completing tasks
• Poor Judgement
• Changes in mood or personality
• Trouble with visual images and spatial relationships
As with other progressive diseases, your loved ones need for support and assistance will grow over time. This allows your family and all caregivers time to prepare and plan for things that will come. To assist, we have combined the expertise of individuals and agencies from multiple disciplines to teach the core of caregiving basics which cover the practical, psychological, and safety aspects of caregiving at home. The goal is to provide a solid foundation for any caregiver to fall back on when they are at their weakest and are most vulnerable – usually in the evenings or sometime in the middle of the night.
Over 150 years of combined engagement and long-term care experience mixed with two decades of being a family caregiver, we have produced, the Activities for the Family Alzheimer's: How to Engage / How to Live. This book, written in language we can all understand, offers information and insight to enhance quality of life for family caregivers.
